Relationships with the Cards and a Journey
My guest this week is Rachel Pollack. We discuss tarot as a relationship between you the reader and the cards. Rachel leads a guided journey into the energy of the Fool card. This episode should not be listened to while driving or using heaving machinery! The induction Rachel provides is designed to put you in to a state of relaxation and an altered state of consciousness.
Rachel Pollack
is a poet, an award-winning novelist, an authority on the modern interpretation of Tarot cards, and a Tarot card artist. Her novel Godmother Night won the 1997 World Fantasy Award and was described by Kirkus Reviews as “a magical exploration of the deepest roots of life and death.” Her earlier novel, Unquenchable Fire
, won Britain’s Arthur C. Clarke Award, and was described by The New York Review of Science Fiction as “not only the best fantasy of the year, possibly the best of the decade, and the best feminist novel of the decade.”
She has published thirteen books on Tarot, including 78 Degrees of Wisdom considered a modern classic and the Bible of Tarot reading. She also has written on other non-fiction subjects, including The Body of the Goddess
, which traces the origin and development of religion in the human body and nature. Her Shining Tribe Tarot
, designed and drawn by Rachel herself, draws on tribal and prehistoric images from six continents and 50,000 years. She has had several shows of her artwork, both Tarot and other images. Her books have been published in thirteen languages. She has taught classes and workshops in Europe, North America, and Australia. Rachel grew up in Poughkeepsie, the setting for Unquenchable Fire. After nineteen years living in Europe, she returned, in 1990, to live in the Hudson Valley.
Rachel’s most recent book, Seeker, won the COVR Award for best book on divination at the 2006 International New Age Trade Show.

What a beautiful and illuminating episode! I feel that I’m going to be reflecting on the idea of a having a more receptive relationship with the cards for some time to come. How true that we often ‘go to the cards’ in an aggressive and seeking way vs inviting their energies into us. Making the space for the cards to come to us seems not only a balanced approach but also a very respectful one.
Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the journey. It has helped me connect with the energy of the Fool in a deeper and more immediate way.

Leisa (& Rachel!):
It is so great to know that someone besides myself is put off by the “throw the books away” campaign.
Tarot will be whatever it will be on an individual basis. The doors that re opened are individual doors.
I especially liked the conversation on the various ways of looking at pathworking and journeying. Each way has its own benefits, and its own way of doing things.
Let us each find our own way through the Tarot!
Blessings,
Bonnie

Leisa, you are wonderful!!! What a fantastic podcast and I loved this episode particularly having met Rachel Pollack when she visited us in England at the TABI (Tarot Association of the British Isles) conference.
This was a delightful journey into the card and Rachel’s voice was so relaxing.
What a wonderful journey and what wonderful companions we have.
