A significator is a card selected to represent the querent (or object) of the reading. It is very common to select a significator from the court cards. In this episode, Dena Decastro joins me to explore ways to select a significator.

Excerpt from the Pictorial Key to the Tarot - an ancient celtic method of divination
This mode of divination is the most suitable for obtaining an answer to a definite question. The Diviner first selects a card to represent the person or, matter about which inquiry is made. This card is called the Significator. Should he wish to ascertain something in connexion with himself he takes the one which corresponds to his personal description.
A Knight should be chosen as the Significator if the subject of inquiry is a man of forty years old and upward; a King should be chosen for any male who is under that age a Queen for a woman who is over forty years and a Page for any female of less age.
Confessions by Ginny Hunt
I am a naughty tarot reader. I break the rules. Oh, I know, there are no real tarot rules. Technically. However, there are some rather strong suggestions regarding tarot usage and I am here to say I’ve disregarded those, too. I say this with neither shame nor pride, but simply to say we each must forge our own way with this tarot reading thing and whatever works for you, both functionally and ethically, is what is best. Leisa:
What a great subject! I am one who also appreciates the print-outs - I like having notes at hand to try and understand something. It really is wonderful that you covered several different ways of choosing a significator. Speaking for myself, even when they are part of a spread, I do not use them. The depth that a significator brings can be attained using other methods, such as Elemental Dignities.
The question came up re taking the significaator out of the deck, and whether that would affect the reading. You gave a very valid thought line for showing that each card in the reading is referenced to the significator, so in essence it “is” always there. For those of us who might feel that the energy of that card has been taken from a specific position that it was “meant” for, I might suggest that the significator be drawn from a separate deck than that used for the reading.
I love Ginny’s irreverent attitude - I think that all readers should develop the self-confidence to know when to “break the rules”.
Speakign for myself, I am thrilled to be a continuing part of this Pod Cast. It has helped me get my thoughts out there, and shown me weak links in both my writing and presentation. Hopefully, both will get better!
Blessings,
Bonnie

Leisa,
Thank you for covering my question regarding the King and Queen of Wands.
How surprised was I to hear it discussed on the podcast!
Your conversation with Dena has really helped me to see the astrological associations in a much more flexible way and to consider more the elemental aspects of the court cards when selecting significators. By not pinning one specific astrological association to a card, I can see how it gives us the freedom to look more at the querent’s characteristics rather than strictly sun signs. In my opinion pidgeonholing doesn’t work so well anyway!
Imagine telling an older, masculine, Cancerian male that his signficator is the Queen of Cups. “what!?”
Cheers,
Brad

I enjoy your podcast very much. It is helping me to reconnect with Tarot (which I had started to learn about 10 years ago
then I became more interested in astrology and studied it instead). I
wondered if you ever considered the progressed Sun for significators.
I realized recently that I have become more the Queen of Swords as my Sun progressed into Aquarius and my husband became the King of Wands as his Sun progressed into Leo.
Thank you for your helpful and inspiring podcast. I am growing more
connected and confident with the Tarot because of you and your
podcast.
